The court scene

  • unbiased/impartial
  • fair
  • understanding

In the the play I don’t think that it shows that Shylock will not have a fair topic as the  duke says “I am sorry for thee: thou art come to answer a stony adversery, an inhuman wretch uncapable of pity, void and empty from any dram of mercy” and in this he says Shylock doesn’t have pity for anyone and is a heartless enemy. Also in this speech it sounds like the duke is on antonios side and will not let Shylock win the trial.

uncapable of pity: Shylock won’t show any pity.                                                        Stony adversary: heartless enemy                                                  Inhuman wretch: two faced inhuman                                       Void and empty from any dram of mercy:

the image I get from the judge from his first line is that he is biased Antonio this is because he says sorry to Antonio for Shylocks foolish complaint he thinks this is very silly and that Shylock is stupid for putting in this complaint!

Essay

Is the merchant of Venice anti-Semitic???

In this piece of writing I will be giving my opinion on the statement above “Is the merchant of Venice anti-Semitic. Anti-semitism is racism towards the Jewish people and culture. The term Anti-Semitism came around just after the holocaust, as the holocaust was the precedent of all racism and is known as the most brutal and horrific type of racism.

Firstly, I would strongly say that the Merchant of Venice is very anti-Semitic as you can see this in The opening scene in which the Christians Aka Antonio etc. Were spitting on the Jews as if they were the buckets western Cowboys spat into. This is why I agree with this and that is why this is my first point.

Secondly, I also think that the play is Anti-Semitic as in Act 2 Scene 8 Shylock is called a ‘Dog Jew’
